When Past Trauma Shapes the Present

When the past tugs at the present, it shows up at work, in parenting, and in the moments you try to connect. Your body and mind go on high alert — you may feel unsafe, agitated, and anxious. Or you go numb and disconnect just to get through the day. You don't have to keep managing it alone.

At Mother Nurture Therapy Group, we understand how trauma can shape your nervous system, your relationships, and your sense of safety. We meet you with gentle care, understanding that daily life doesn't pause while you heal. Together, we'll move at a pace that honors your body's wisdom and rebuilds trust from the inside out.

The impacts of trauma look different for everyone.

You might notice

  • Feeling anxious or constantly on edge

  • Sleep difficulties, nightmares, or intrusive memories

  • Depression, emotional numbness, or shutdown

  • Shame, self-blame, or a harsh inner critic

  • Difficulty trusting or connecting with others

  • Isolating, irritability, or conflict in relationships

  • Trouble setting boundaries

  • Physical stress symptoms (tight chest, headaches, stomach issues)

What happened to you left a mark. We’ll help you process what’s stuck and make room for a calmer, more connected life.

how we can help

We pair evidence-based care with steady, relational support to offer practical relief and create space for deeper healing that lasts.

We begin by understanding your story—what happened, how it lives in your body, and the patterns it shapes today.

Because trauma is relational, we focus on connection: to yourself, your partner, and the people you love.

As we trace the roots, we'll steady your nervous system with practical tools: breathing, grounding, guided imagery, and mindful attention. These help soften reactivity and make daily stressors easier to navigate.

Trauma therapy is about restoring safety and connection in your body, your relationships, and your life.

When it’s time to go deeper, we may use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to reprocess the memories and meanings driving your symptoms.

If EMDR isn't the right fit, we'll draw on other gentle, effective approaches tailored to you. We also welcome partners into the process when it's supportive, through couples therapy, brief joint sessions, or practical coaching in co-regulation, communication, and shared meaning.

FAQs

Do I have to retell everything in detail for therapy to work?

No. We move at your pace and prioritize your sense of safety. With EMDR, you don’t need to share every detail for your brain to reprocess a memory. You’ll always have the choice about what you say out loud and what you keep private.

How will I know I’m ready for EMDR?

Readiness looks like having enough regulation skills to stay within a workable range during and after sessions. We’ll build those skills first and check in often. If EMDR isn’t the right fit, there are many other gentle, effective ways to heal. We’ll tailor the approach to you.

What if I don’t remember everything clearly?

You don’t need a perfect timeline. Trauma can fragment memory. We’ll work with what your body and mind can remember (sensations, images, emotions, beliefs) and support healing from there.

Does a difficult birth or postpartum experience 'count' as trauma?

If your body or mind experienced the event as overwhelming, unsafe, or out of control, then yes, it counts. Your experience matters and deserves care. Many clients with perinatal trauma find relief using a trauma-informed, paced approach.

Can my partner join sessions?

Absolutely. Sometimes a joint session can help your partner understand triggers and learn co-regulation tools. We also offer couples therapy if relationship patterns need attention.

Will this be re-traumatizing?

Our approach centers safety and consent. We titrate exposure, keep resources online, and pause as needed. The aim is integration, not re-living.

Do you take insurance?

We’re an out-of-network practice and can provide superbills for potential reimbursement.

What are your fees?

Our private-pay rates reflect clinician training and expertise, and the time we invest in your care. You’ll receive your therapist’s exact fee before scheduling.

Current ranges:

  • Individual therapy (50 min): $180–$250

  • Couples therapy (50 min): $200–$300

Contact us for more details and to see what might be most supportive for you and your journey.

Do you offer sliding scale fees?

We reserve limited sliding-scale spots based on financial need and therapist availability. If a spot isn’t open right now, we can add you to a waitlist or provide referrals.
